In 2015, Meteomatics as first Swiss Company received the BVLOS-Approval for mini UAVs. Today, two years later, Meteomatics is still the only company in Switzerland with the approval to fly beyond visual line of sight. The extension Meteomatics received in spring 2017 includes the possibility of, under certain conditions, flying beyond visual line of sight also during the day instead of just being permitted to fly at night. The vertical limit of the permission remains at an altitude of 1500 metres above ground.
The goal of the Meteodrone project is to improve high-resolution weather forecasting models. The UAVs measure meteorological parameters within the Planetary Boundary Layer and close the existing data gap. Many test flights verified significant improvements of the forecasts, especially for fog and thunderstorm events. For this reason Meteomatics started to build a network of drone flight operations last year. Benjamin Koffel is one of the drone pilots and was interviewed by the Tagblatt to get an impression of the activity as a drone operator.
