Global Ensemble Forecasts

Probabilistic forecasts may provide more reliable forecasts of a few hours to a number of days or a month ahead and hence are regarded as better tools for taking uncertainties into consideration and hedging against weather risks: particularly in agriculture and insurance industries.

Meteomatics provides both post-processed ECMWF and GFS ensembles, so that we can downscale to 90 m resolution from the native model resolution (ECMWF 10km): to further improve forecast accuracy and extend forecast length for important parameters (out to 46 days for temperature, precipitation, and wind). Meteomatics also provides 7-month view for temperature and precipitation. Users can also request members as clusters at a specific timestep, median, median min and median max

Polar Vortex Index

We experienced a collapse in the polar vortex early in Feb bringing very cold temperatures to Europe, Leading to rising demand in energy and prices, both in UK and US

Meteomatics polar vortex index provides the average wind speed at 10, 50 or 200 hPa between 60°N and 90°N and thus indicates the strength of the stratospheric polar vortex during the polar winter.

The SPV index provides a measure of the circumpolar vortex strength and indirectly relates to a risk of cooling temperatures near the surface in the northern hemisphere if decreasing below zero.

If the index becomes negative, the vortex disruption is such that a “split" or strong “displacement" is underway, possibly weakening the jet stream in the troposphere.

Meteomatics provides forecasts on the probability of tropical cyclones forming to give traders early warning of severe weather impacts, with Meteomatics global tropical cyclone parameters.

Plus, Meteomatics also provides tropical cyclone tracks so that users can display the ensemble members of the forecasted track for tropical cyclones, allowing them to visualize the spread of members and determine likely impacts of the storm to inform trading.

Finally, users are able to request satellite imagery to visualize storm and assess economic impacts, such as port activity and ships queuing at sea.

Seasonal Forecasts

Financial trading can benefit substantially from long-range weather forecasts, for the month or the season, which can help to optimize operations and deal more effectively with the adverse impacts of climate variability, including extreme weather events.

Meteomatics Climatological weather regimes are computed for cold (October to April) and warm (May to September) seasons, across four patterns:

    1.  A strong positive anomaly over the Greenland area, together with a trough elongating from the southwest to the northeast Atlantic Ocean.
    2.  An east-west dipole, [...] associated with a pronounced wave structure
    3. A trough centered over Iceland together with a small-amplitude. positive anomaly in the southern part of the domain.
    4. A ridge in mid-Atlantic.

Re-Analysis Data Set (ERA5)

Reanalysis data provide the most complete picture currently possible of past weather and climate. They are a blend of observations with past short-range weather forecasts rerun with modern weather forecasting models. They are globally complete and consistent in time and are sometimes referred to as 'maps without gaps'

Reanalysis data set can be of tremendous benefit for AI & ML applications, helping inform algorithms of the impacts of changes made to the forecast model; The ‘frozen’ forecasting system used in reanalysis provides a benchmark against which improvements can be measured: if there are gains in forecast quality relative to the reanalysis system, it must be because of changes in the forecasting system, and not because the atmosphere happened to be more predictable or better observed over the verification period.

Finally, reanalysis is essential for forecast products predicting anomalous or extreme weather. These require a reference climate, which reanalysis helps to provide

Meteomatics enhanced downscaled reanalysis data based on ERA5, which is a global atmospheric reanalysis from 1979 to the present, continuously updated in real-time. ERA5 combines vast amounts of historical observations into global estimates using advanced modeling and data assimilation systems. The downscaling improves the coarse grid native representation down to a resolution of 90m. This is achieved by applying high-resolution land usage data, soil, terrain data, astronomical computations & other sources

Windward wanted to expand their maritime intelligence service into the marine insurance market.

In addition to understanding how to help underwriters better understand the risk profile of the business they are writing, there is also the need to identify fraudulent claims and high-risk behavior like steaming into storms and putting vessels, cargo and crews at risk.

Solution

The Weather API was put in place across the whole Windward platform. This means that their clients have easy access to the data they require and are able to simply visualize weather conditions at the time of a claim and weather impacts on the vessel in their book of business. Our meteorological data and its ease of access has been highly valued and enabled Meteomatics to contribute to a variety of innovative products.

Access Meteomatics Climate Projections Data and Impact Assessment Reports

Even in an (increasingly unlikely) +1.5°C world, weather conditions can be expected to be quite different from today. Hence why the world's richest Weather API has now incorporated climate projection data.

Meteomatics sees an urgent and critical need to help organizations prepare and plan for a changing climate. Therefore, we now make CMIP6 climate projection data created by the Meteorological Institute of Japan (MRI) available and offer our expertise in weather and climate science to help the insurance industry understand the potential impact of Climate Change.

Climate Projection Data 

Meteomatics’ customers are able to request the latest CMIP6 data across all 5 social economic pathways, out to 2100. Meteomatics Meteorology and Climate Science Teams have applied their expertise to standardize and process raw climate projection data: making it easier for the insurance industry to consume and integrate with their existing data infrastructures.

Meteomatics has sought to broaden the applicability of climate projection data by calculating around 40 derived parameters for temperature, wind, precipitation, and radiation. Examples include the wind direction at different altitudes, the minimum and maximum temperature at different altitudes, the global radiation in watts, joules, and other units, or the height of the planetary boundary layer. All helping to increase the usability and relevance of climate predictions to more users than ever before.

Plus, Meteomatics has also improved the detail and relevance of the climate projections by downscaling the horizontal resolution (90 meters), so that the climate projections take into account the local topography which is important considering its impact on temperature and wind. Finally, downscaling the temporal resolution (5-minute timesteps), which is useful for creating consistent time series. Combining historical, forecast and climate data can be very challenging in terms of different temporal resolutions. Meteomatics’ API allows for easy retrieval of homogeneous time series between 1979 and 2100 with any desired temporal resolution. This can be quite important in the scope of investigations of certain weather patterns or machine learning
