The Gordon Bennett Cup, or Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett, is the world's oldest gas balloon race, having started in 1906, and is regarded by many as the premier event in world balloon racing. As part of the event in Bern, this year, Meteomatics was also in attendance showcasing its world leading Meteodrone and gathering detailed weather data before the start of the competition. Balloons are particularly sensitive to differing wind speeds and changes in wind direction so by having access to this drone information, in near real-time, made a significant difference for the flight planning teams. Whilst the wind direction steadily veered from the southwest to west through the first 2,700m, the wind speeds remained fairly constant between 5m/s and 10m/s which allowed for safe starting conditions.
