Over the weekend (30th / 31st May), we were invited by NASA to support their global hackathon. Coders, technologists and others participated in an all-virtual challenge to identify trends in the COVID-19 pandemic. During a period of 48 hours, more than 15,000 participants from 150 countries created more than 2,000 virtual teams.
We saw a huge interest in our weather api, providing access to hundreds of teams who used our data, alongside other Earth observation data sets from providers including NASA, European Space Agency (ESA), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), and the National Centre for Space Studies (CNES), to build insights and propose solutions to one of twelve challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The challenges focused on the following themes:
- Learning about the virus and its spread using space-based data
- Local response/change and solutions
- Impacts of COVID-19 on the Earth system/Earth system response
- Economic opportunity, impact, and recovery during and following COVID-19
We received lots of positive feedback from participants who found our weather api easy to use and integrate with other data sets at both a global and local level. Helping them analyse and understand the interplay between weather and earth systems in a very short period of time (over a weekend)!
We were really proud to be asked to collaborate by NASA Space Apps Challenge Team and look forward to seeing how the proposals could provide insights between weather and COVID-19. We hope a winning proposal has created a solution that will help the globe mitigate the impact of COVID-19.
In July, the Space Apps Global Organizing Team will announce the Global Finalists and six global winners will be announced in early August. Meteomatics will share the results and the innovative solutions created on our social media channels and website.
