As existing weather models fail to predict extreme weather events such as severe storms or thunderstorms properly, NOAA set up a project to evaluate the value of different mobile observing systems. Therefore, in September 2016 the cooperation between Meteomatics and the U.S. weather agency was announced. A few weeks later, at the beginning of November 2016, the first project phase was finished successfully. The second project phase takes place during the main tornado season, from May 8th through 20th, and amongst others Meteomatics and the Meteodrones are in Oklahoma to enable more precise forecasts of thunderstorms and tornados.
