10/01/2009 / 9th EMS Annual Meeting / This study, co-authored by Sébastien Argence, shows that accurately capturing fine-scale upper-level potential vorticity structures is critical for forecasting Medicanes. By correcting these features using high-resolution data, the simulations significantly improved predictions of the storm’s track, intensity, and rainfall—highlighting the need to better represent upper-level dynamics in short-range and ensemble forecasts.

11/13/2008 / Université Toulouse III - Paul Sabatier / Dr. Sébastien Argence’s PhD thesis, Predictability of heavy rainfall in the Mediterranean: impact of initial conditions and application to the Algiers flood of November 2001, shows that even short-range weather forecasts can fail when initial atmospheric conditions are slightly off. Using simulations of the 2001 Algiers superstorm, he demonstrates how small errors—especially in upper-level dynamics and potential vorticity—can amplify and drastically alter cyclone development and heavy rainfall, while targeted corrections to these initial conditions can significantly improve forecast accuracy.
