08.06.2022. Meteomatics is the first company worldwide to calculate a Europe-wide weather model with a spatial resolution of one kilometer. Hourly model calculations provide the most up-to-date forecasts every hour, which also sets new standards in terms of forecast actuality.

Granular weather data are the basis of reliable forecasts. These, in turn, are crucial for good plannability of operational processes and extreme weather situations. The basis for highly accurate forecasts is to be provided by the new and unique European weather model EURO1k. With its remarkable resolution of one kilometer, fine-scale forecasts can be provided for all industries across Europe.

EURO1k is an extremely fine-scale weather model for the whole of Europe, which is calculated by the expert team at Meteomatics with a resolution of one kilometer. This resolution is absolutely unique for a weather model. The EURO1k from Meteomatics is thus able to produce highly precise forecasts spatially and temporally throughout Europe. And this completely individually for relevant industries. Numerous measurement data from different European countries are added to a model and further weather details are also incorporated into the model. To further improve the forecasts, the European weather model is recalculated hourly with the latest weather data.

"With a high temporal resolution, we manage to greatly improve the weather forecasts once again in terms of the timing of weather events," explains CEO and founder Dr. Martin Fengler. "Our weather data is provided by the model calculations in a resolution of 20 minutes. By means of data interpolation, the data can be output in a resolution of up to 1 minute."

The high resolution of one kilometer enables Meteomatics to achieve unprecedented accuracy, especially on a local level. Especially customers who are engaged in local activities and are dependent on local weather experience great added value from this new forecast quality. This includes, for example, the production of renewable energy, the influence on transport routes or the operation of an airport. Accurate weather forecasts directly impact the bottom line of operations in these industries.

"With the EURO1k, we set completely new standards in the area of accuracy and timeliness of weather forecasts - for the whole of Europe and in some places even beyond,” Dr. Martin Fengler explains.

The standard for global weather models is 20 km resolution. Thus, the EURO1k is the first and so far only model in all of Europe that covers a fine-scale resolution that can model even the smallest meteorological phenomena (thunderstorms, hail, storms, etc.). With the most accurate geodata based on downscaling algorithms, the 1 km-resolved EURO1k even achieves a spatial resolution of up to 90 meters.

Meteomatics is very proud of the new and absolutely unique EURO1k weather model. With the new EURO1k, Meteomatics underlines its ambition to be the leading global provider of weather information based on innovative technologies. Christian Schluchter, CTO at Meteomatics explains, "We will continue to develop and improve our technologies so that we can provide the best weather data worldwide. We believe that technology and innovation makes the difference and we try to implement this every day."
