What Is a Weather API?
An API (Application Programming Interface) provides an interface for various programming languages that allows developers and programmers to integrate the data directly into their systems in the desired format in just a few steps.
The Meteomatics weather API contains data on weather and climate. It provides access to over 25 weather models (e.g. GFS, ECMWF, DWD, MeteoFrance, UKMetoffice and many more) and more than 1800 weather parameters. Our interface is thus considered the gateway to the largest database of historical weather data, forecast data and climate data worldwide.
Benefits and Advantages of an Interface for Weather Data
Weather data is often very complex and is constantly growing with improvements in computing power and weather science. The complicated data formats for climate and weather data (GRIB2 and NC) require a lot of computing power. Computing such large amounts of data can be costly and time-consuming. Weather forecasts, for example, are delivered too late and are then mostly useless.
Why Do You Need a Weather API?
With the help of an intelligent API query, the amount of data generated when retrieving weather data can be reduced. We break down the complex data format for weather and climate data into processable data and make it available to everyone with our weather API.
An API can provide exactly the data you need to drive your business forward. Use the Weather API as an efficient tool to integrate into your programming environment and enable the analysis of weather effects or the operation of a system or plant under certain weather conditions. Our API delivers the data at a significantly higher resolution and can help you make better decisions based on the weather situation, increase efficiency or minimise costs.
What Does the Weather API Offer?
The weather API offers you simple, direct access to high-resolution, global weather data. Get the weather data that is relevant to your problem quickly and easily. Using the API you can integrate high-quality weather data into all kinds of business tools and services. The WMS/WFS capability of our weather interface even allows integration into visualizations. Open source, i.e. free, data connectors are available on GitHub for all common programming languages. The data can be output in all common file formats.

Weather API From Meteomatics
The Weather API is the uniform access point to a database of global weather data – for any application, any industry, any institution and any national weather service, faster and more efficiently than traditional weather database systems.
Weather has a major impact on daily life (consumption, behaviour, etc.) and the design of many businesses (demand, energy requirements, planning, logistics, risk management, etc.). Weather data can be used to better understand the impact of weather and help reduce business costs, improve business processes and make them more effective. A better understanding of the weather also helps to reduce the impact of natural hazards and thus prevent damage to people and infrastructure.
At Meteomatics, we see ourselves as the point of contact for the world's best weather data. The highly competitive weather forecast market requires a product with extreme quality gain. We know the market and offer a high level of detailed knowledge. With a team of experienced experts, we are able to calculate and offer weather data in extremely high resolution.
The Meteomatics Weather API:
Enables an infinite number of accesses per day
Offers a WMS and WFS interface and several other formats
Delivers forecasts with an average response time of 20 to 30 ms, depending on the query
Works securely with HTTP basic authentication and is HTTPS supported
As a RESTful API: Conveniently query weather data via URL
Makes everything available as one interface: historical and current weather data, weather forecasts, climate models, data from more than 25 weather models, ...
Use Weather and Climate Data From a Collection of Over 1800 Parameters
Data Connectors and Formats
Variety of Formats and Connectors in Different Programming Languages
The focus for us at Meteomatics is on providing complicated weather data in a user-friendly data format. This should help to simplify the integration of the data into existing workflows. Across several programming languages, we offer free connectors on Github:
Weather and climate data form the basis of our weather API. We collect and determine the data with the help of:
Global and regional weather models
Digital 3D models
Combined with our proprietary 90-meter downscaling technology, we can deliver the most accurate and up-to-date weather data possible.
Meteocache – Modelling Weather Data in Real Time
The Meteomatics API is powered by our Meteocache. Meteomatics Meteocache is a sophisticated background caching system and holds a large amount of observations, which allows the Weather API to recalculate the forecast with the latest available information about the state of the atmosphere. We improve the accuracy of weather data by taking into account the details of the topography. Based on a proven interpolation technique, the latest weather data from the weather models are combined with model data from NASA's 90m digital terrain model and refined to produce higher local accuracy.
The Meteocache ensures that large amounts of data can be modeled and provided "on the fly", i.e. in real time. The meteocache matches the data in time and space and ensures that the weather API can return the requested data query efficiently and very quickly despite the size and format of the original data set.
Weather API Queries
With Meteomatics, you get access to weather and climate data covering the Earth and its oceans across all time scales through just one API endpoint: Nowcast, forecast, seasonal, climate and space, historical data (up to 1979, depending on location), etc.
With our weather API, the otherwise complex weather data is played out in a simplified way and makes it usable for every application.
URL Building a Weather API From Meteomatics
Weather data can also be easily obtained via a link with our weather API. The URL creator can be used for this purpose. The URL is composed of properties that always follow the same structure.
The weather API can be used in many ways and must deliver different values depending on the use case. Our different ways of requesting weather data make it possible to obtain the most accurate information on the weather situation of the respective location or route.
Weather information needs to be stored or further processed. Known output formats ensure that the weather data you obtain via our weather API can be output according to your needs:
A RESTful API provides seamless access to historical, current and forecast data. THE WMS/WFS capability of our data enables integration into visualizations.
How Can a Weather API Be Integrated?
It couldn't be simpler! The weather API offers convenient access to a wide range of weather data and can be integrated into existing or your own systems with just a few lines of code.
For each programming language, a detailed description is available in our documentation. Our videos provide additional support for integrating the weather API into your environment without any problems.
